Our programs utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as the primary method of treatment, which allows the patient to take a more active role in their care. Patients gain power and control by modifying their feelings and actions. Patients are seen daily by their attending psychiatrist for medication management and to monitor their progress towards treatment goals. Family therapy sessions can also increase support and understanding within a family or significant other support system. The treatment team works with the patient and family to help develop a plan for continued recovery and wellness after discharge. Our comprehensive treatment approach provides the foundation needed to assist patients in their recovery.
Today, alcohol and drug dependencies are recognized as life-threatening diseases. At Saint Simons By-The-Sea, we regard them as treatable medical illnesses with our addiction recovery program. We treat individuals struggling with addiction to drugs or alcohol as well as those with dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis occurs when a patient is found to have a chemical dependency in addition to a psychological disorder.
Our unique program helps chemically dependent adults approach their illness in a holistic, comprehensive manner. Treatment starts with detoxification and medically managed withdrawal. Detoxification is the process by which the body clears itself of drugs. The detox protocol is designed to manage the acute and potentially dangerous physiological effects of stopping drug use. Patients also learn to address the psychological, social and behavioral problems associated with addiction. Through the use of therapy and a 12-step approach, our physicians, nurses and counselors help patients confront their negative life experiences and address psychological symptoms related to depression, anxiety, trauma and grief that may contribute to their chemical dependency issues. Patients are encouraged to learn self-intervention techniques and identify behaviors, events and emotional states that can cause relapse. Emphasis is placed on learning the lasting behavioral changes necessary for sustained recovery.
Once detox is complete patients may have the option of remaining in treatment for our substance abuse rehabilitation program. Once in the rehabilitation track, patients transition to separate education and therapy process groups where they can begin to take a more in depth look at the elements of their recovery. Patients also have the opportunity to participate in yoga, music and art therapy groups that enables them to further solidify gains made in the rehabilitation program.
Length of stay is determined by the needs of the patient and the treatment team that is supporting the patient during their stay at St. Simons. The treatment team also works with the patient and family to help develop a plan for continued recovery and wellness after discharge.
