Adults

Saint Simons By-The-Sea has two programs for adults: Psychiatry and Addictive Diseases. Our approach to psychiatric treatment encourages the adult patient to be an active participant in his or her treatment. A comprehensive evaluation identifies the appropriate level of care.

We address a wide range of problems in our adult programs, including:

  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Phobias
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Physical/sexual abuse
  • Alcohol abuse and dependency
  • Drug abuse and dependency

Adult Psychiatric Unit

This program is designed for patients struggling with depression, psychosis, anxiety or other mental health issues. Saint Simons By-The-Sea utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as the primary strategy for its mental health programs. CBT allows the patient to take a more active role in their treatment. Patients gain power and control by modifying their feelings and actions. This approach, coupled with medication management, provides a comprehensive treatment program. The daily schedule includes individual and group therapy, recreational activities and wellness education. Patients are treated in an intensive therapeutic environment that provides medical and psychiatric stabilization and 24-hour nursing care.

Problems we address:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Extreme anger and/or dangerous behavior
  • Depression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Hallucinations and/or delusional thinking
  • Phobias
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Physical/sexual abuse

Addictive Disease/Dual Diagnosis Unit

Today, alcohol and drug dependencies are recognized as life-threatening diseases. At Saint Simons By The Sea we regard them as treatable medical illnesses. Dual diagnosis occurs when a patient is found to have a chemical dependency in addition to a psychological disorder.

The Dual Diagnosis unit at Saint Simons By The Sea is a unique program that helps chemically dependent adults approach their illness in a holistic, comprehensive manner. The goal of this approach is twofold: first, to provide a solid foundation for recovery, and second, to discover any underlying psychological disorders that may be at the core of the patient’s addiction.

Through the use of therapy and a 12-step approach, our physicians and counselors help patients confront their negative life experiences and the depression, anxiety, trauma, anger and grief that may contribute to their chemical dependency issues.

As inpatient treatment stays became shorter, we have developed a dual diagnosis program that takes all the components of the traditional 28-day inpatient program and condenses them into 14 days. Dual diagnosis occurs when a patient is found to have a chemical dependency in addition to a psychological disorder.

Patients are encouraged to learn self-intervention techniques and identify behaviors, events and emotional states that cause relapses. Emphasis is placed on learning relapse prevention skills. Discharge planning is seen as essential to getting patients on the road to recovery.

Problems we address:

  • Alcohol abuse and dependency
  • Drug abuse and dependency
  • Alcohol or drug dependency or abuse with coexisting mental health diagnosis
